On 27 May 2010, Govert Hamers, the President Director of IHC Merwede, unveiled the first variable frequency drive (VFD), designed and built by IHC Drives & Automation. VFDs are used in in the dredging and offshore industry to regulate the speed of dredge pumps, cutters, winches and propulsion. The IHC Merwede VFDs, using power modules from Vacon Benelux, have excellent and distinctive characteristics such as seamless interface with the platform and dredging automation, dust-proof housing, fantastic pricing, JIT delivery, cooling system integrated in the ship, ranges up to 4.5MW, plug-and-play start-up.
